Several factors, such as excessive nail biting and grinding of teeth, can lead to an overbite. Also referred to as buck teeth, an overbite is a common dental condition where the front top teeth extend beyond the bottom teeth.
While this may seem like a minor issue, overbites can be linked to several issues such as gum diseases, breathing problems, pain when chewing, cavities, and speech problems. Thus, it is important to treat overbites to avoid further complications. Here are a few treatment options;
Braces
Although braces are commonly used to fix crooked teeth, they are a great alternative for fixing overbites. In fact, braces are by far the most effective way of treating overbites. They attach braces to both the upper and lower teeth and the wire aligns the teeth. Braces fit the elastic bands on the brackets that create pressure that slowly shifts the jaw into position. Fixing an overbite with braces will take around two years, but the duration depends on the severity of the case.
Invisible Aligners
Invisible aligners are also used to fix overbites in mild cases. They work by moving the upper teeth back and then the lower teeth forward until they are in alignment. Invisible aligners typically take one year to align the teeth.
However, the duration of the treatment process will depend on the severity of the problem. One advantage of aligners is that they are almost invisible. This means that you can fix your overbite with no one knowing.
Jaw surgery
Dentists will recommend jaw surgery in very severe cases of overbites, where a surgical procedure is the only option. Ideally, the dentist will start by recommending other treatments and if these treatments do not work, then they will recommend surgery.
Jaw surgery is done when there are skeletal issues that are causing the overbites and when there is a big difference between the size of the upper and lower jaw. While surgery may seem scary, there is no need to be concerned as the orthodontist does the procedure under anesthesia and last only four hours.
Some people prefer not to go for dental surgeries; therefore, your options are limited to aligners or braces. Unlike with braces, with aligners, you do not have to go to the dentist every month, you can just change them at home. However, to find out the best treatment option for you, consult with your dentist who can diagnose how severe your case is and offer the best option for you.
