Most people have been told they need to floss daily at least once in their lives. Despite this advice, many of us fail to floss regularly. The question is – why? There are some main reasons that people don't floss consistently, and if any of these sound like you, it is important that you make changes to your oral hygiene routine.
They Don't Know the Importance
One of the main reasons that people fail to floss on a daily basis is that they simply don't see the importance. Some rationalize this decision by stating the brush well each day, so they don't need to do any extra flossing. While brushing is certainly important, you still need to floss. Flossing cleans the area between the teeth that a toothbrush can't reach.
Flossing Hurts or Causes Bleeding
If you floss your teeth and notice bleeding, inflammation, or pain, you may shy away from doing it in the future. Unfortunately, these symptoms are even more of reason to floss on a daily basis. These signs indicate that you may be suffering from gingivitis – the earliest stages of gum disease. Fortunately, gingivitis is reversible at this stage with improved oral hygiene. Brushing and flossing regularly will help to remove the bacteria that cause these symptoms.
