It is a nice saying, but for people who struggle with oral health issues, the idea of cold air is not always as pleasant. They think that it will cause their teeth to hurt.

At Raptou Family Dental, the question we can help you answer is whether the cold air is the reason for the pain or if it's something else.

What Does Cold Weather Do?

Cold weather can affect the teeth without you realizing it. When teeth are exposed to extreme cold or hot air, they can expand and contract. Over time, this can cause cracks in the teeth. The changes in the teeth can lead to erosion of the enamel. The enamel identifies the protective layer of the skin. Without the enamel, the next layer of the teeth becomes exposed. This can lead to tooth sensitivity. When the cold air reaches the tooth that is sensitive, you feel pain.

Causes of Weather Sensitivity

It is possible that even if you have a good oral hygiene routine, you will still suffer from tooth sensitivity due to cold air. The chances of suffering from this problem go up if you have problems with your teeth, gum disease, or have some bad habits that lead to the erosion of the enamel.

Causes for enamel erosion include tooth decay, gum disease, brushing too hard and teeth grinding without the protection of a mouth guard. The use of teeth whitening products can also lead to issues with weather sensitivity. The solution is to correct any of the problems and improve your oral health habits.

While tooth sensitivity to cold air may not be a big problem, it could also be a sign that there is something wrong. The best way to find out what is behind the pain from cold air is to schedule a dental exam in our office.
