Posted on 5/23/2022 by Dr. Nick Raptou
How Eating Disorders Affect Your MouthEating disorders are psychological illnesses that lead to feeding patterns that affect the body. Some eating habits have more adverse effects than others. Eating diseases range from Anorexia to other simple cases. Eating disorders can be accounted as red flags by dental professionals. We have made an effort to discuss some of the disorders and their symptoms.

Eating Disorders

Anorexia is the most prevalent eating disorder. It also has a high mortality rate. People with this disease limit their food and drink uptake. They fear gaining weight hence putting limitations on their feeding. They tend to reduce the number of calories in food or even do without altogether. They also use methods like vomiting or using enemas to get rid of calories.

Bulimia is a feeding disorder characterized by significant uptake or expulsion of calories in one sitting. They binge on calories in one sitting or purge the calories. Purging is done through excessive exercising, taking laxatives, or vomiting. Most people with bulimia are considered healthy hence easy to mistake the disorder. Binge eating disorder involves the uptake of food in large quantities. People tend to think they are in control and can also plan these binges. Characteristics of people who binge eat are eating large amounts of food complete and eating alone to avoid self-guilt embarrassment.

Effect on the mouth

Eating disorders have adverse effects on your oral health and body health. The people who suffer from these disorders have vitamin and mineral deficiencies. These deficiencies lead to improper body functioning, and it can shut down. There are various oral signs of eating disorders. Sensitive teeth, mouth sores, dry mouth, enamel erosion, tooth decay, and enlarged salivary glands. Erosion of tooth enamel is due to acids that come from the stomach as they vomit.

Offering care

Dentists and professionals have proven that eating disorders affect the teeth. They check for soft tissues and dry sockets in the mouth to make recommendations. We encourage making an appointment with our professionals for oral care.
