After a Root Canal

Smiling elderly woman after a pain-free root canal.A root canal is a common treatment for restoring the health of an infected tooth. During this treatment, a small hole is drilled into the top of the tooth, and the infected pulp and nerve are removed. Next, the entire interior of the tooth is cleaned and disinfected. The purpose of a root canal is to eliminate the infection and restore your oral health while also keeping the tooth in its socket. At Raptou Family Dental, we can perform your necessary root canal and help you with what to expect afterward.

Pain after Your Root Canal

One of the goals of a root canal is to eliminate the pain caused by an infection in your tooth. However, after your root canal, it is not uncommon to experience some discomfort. This discomfort will alleviate over time. Minor pain can often be managed with over the counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Take these medications as directed on the bottle. You may also be given a prescription pain reliever if necessary, for more significant pain. Again, take this medication as directed.

Eating after a Root Canal

A healthy, well-balanced diet is recommended to ensure that your body gets the necessary nutrients to heal properly after treatment. However, it is important that you do not bite or chew using the tooth for at least a few days after your treatment. Not using the tooth will help you to heal faster. Avoid eating foods that are sticky or chewy, as these can cause temporary restorations to come loose or fall out. You should also avoid eating hard foods, especially right after your treatment.

Oral Care

Taking care of your mouth is essential for preventing new infections from developing, as well as protecting your oral health. After a root canal, you may continue your normal oral hygiene regimen, just make sure that you take care around your treated tooth. Brush your teeth twice a day and floss once daily.

Getting Your Final Restoration

After a root canal, your treated tooth is provided with a dental crown. The crown helps to protect the tooth from damage and new infections while restoring its strength so that it can continue to function normally. The treated tooth is prepared, meaning that a portion of the tooth enamel is removed.

Impressions are taken of your mouth to design and create your crown. It can take a couple of weeks for the crown to be completed, so a temporary restoration is provided while you wait. It is important that you schedule these appointments promptly after your root canal to reduce the risk of developing a new infection. Failure to have your final restoration placed promptly can result in the need for re-treatment or even the need for a tooth extraction. Timely placement is essential for protecting your treated tooth and ensuring that your treated tooth will be able to remain in place for many years to come.

Root canals have a very high success rate. With proper care, your treated tooth will last a lifetime. If you have any questions or concerns after your root canal treatment, call Raptou Family Dental at (614) 427-0449 today.
