Dental Hygiene
Columbus, OH

Woman brushing teeth at Raptou Family Dental in Columbus, OH.How often do you hear just how important it is to brush and floss your teeth every day, or how important dental cleanings and exams are? Even knowing the recommendations, many people are still lax in their dental hygiene.

They only brush once a day or floss irregularly. Some may skip out on regular dental visits, thinking that their mouth must be healthy because they are not exhibiting symptoms of oral health issues. Skipping out on any part of your dental hygiene routine can significantly increase your risk of developing serious oral health issues.

Raptou Family Dental can help you to develop a good dental hygiene routine to keep your mouth happy and healthy.

Why is Dental Hygiene Important?

There are several reasons why dental hygiene is so important. One reason is that maintaining good habits helps to keep your teeth and gums strong and healthy. Neglecting your dental hygiene, even occasionally, your risk for developing cavities and gum disease increases significantly. If these issues are not addressed, they get worse over time, leading to more serious issues. As these issues worsen, they begin to affect your whole-body health, leaving you vulnerable to serious issues such as:
•  High blood pressure.
•  Heart disease.
•  Diabetes.
•  Digestive issues such as IBS.
•  Issues during pregnancy, including preterm birth and low birthweight.

Dental Hygiene at Home

Most of your dental hygiene takes place at home. It is recommended that you brush your teeth twice a day. You should use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste. When you brush, you should do so for at least two full minutes, making certain that you clean all surfaces of your teeth. Angle your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle against your gums and move your toothbrush back and forth gently. Clean the front surfaces of your teeth as well as the backs and the chewing surfaces.

Flossing should be done at least once a day. Take 18 inches of floss and wind it around your middle fingers until you have about 2 inches of floss between them. Move the floss back and forth to work it between your teeth. Curve it around each tooth and move the floss up and down to remove debris. Do this for each space, using a new section of floss for each one. Do not forget to floss behind your very back teeth, too.

You can complete your dental hygiene routine with an antibacterial mouthwash — this aids in killing any lingering bacteria as well as removing any loose debris from between your teeth. Additionally, it also helps to provide you with fresh breath.

Professional Dental Care

In addition to your dental hygiene routine at home, it is also essential that you have routine dental cleanings and exams twice a year, even if you think your mouth is healthy. Many dental issues do not present symptoms in their earliest stages. By the time you notice something is wrong, the issue has progressed into something more serious, often requiring more invasive treatment.

Cleanings are performed to help you prevent the formation of serious issues. We gently, thoroughly remove all buildup from your teeth, including the most stubborn tartar. We are also able to effectively clean areas of your mouth that you might not be able to properly clean on your own.

During your exams, we can check your teeth for signs of oral health issues. We can spot early warning signs, which then enables us to provide you with the treatment you need right away. Typically, the earlier the issues are addressed, the less invasive the treatment. Moreover, because issues are treated early, you avoid experiencing more serious consequences.
