What Makes Take Home Whitening Trays Superior?
Before we begin to explain the advantages of a take home whitening tray that you can get from us, we want to say first and foremost: if you are thinking about running out to a big box store and picking up some generic tooth whitening kit, please stop in your tracks. We firmly advise against this decision.
Over the counter, tooth whitening kits can damage your tooth enamel, burn your gums and blanch them (turn them white), and cause lingering pain and sensitivity. Alternatively, they may not even be effective at all. Instead, we recommend that you meet with us for a custom tooth whitening tray and bleaching agent.
Getting your teeth whitened with us first requires that we take a good look at your teeth and oral health to make sure you are a good candidate for this procedure. We will start by making sure you do not have any active tooth decay and that the discoloration of your teeth is not due to your enamel eroding, exposing the dentin underneath. We also want to make sure you do not have any gum disease before we proceed. If we do see anything during your appointment that concerns us, we will treat it first.
We will start by thoroughly cleaning your teeth in our office. This includes a procedure called a scaling, which means we will carefully remove all hardened calculus and surface stains with our scaling tool. Once your teeth are clean, we will then take an impression of your mouth to make your custom trays for your whitening procedure. We will also take pictures of your “before” to compare to your final results. When your trays return from our lab, we will ensure they are a good fit. We will educate you on how to use the trays and the bleaching gel to avoid you using it incorrectly; then we will send you home with your professional grade bleaching gel and trays. You can expect to attain several levels of whitening over the next couple of weeks if you wear your trays as recommended. We usually recommend wearing the trays for an hour per night, every night. Avoid drinking, eating, or using tobacco products in the half hour after you use them.
