We all want to look our best. That can include a variety of things, such as dressing in a certain way, wearing your hair in a certain style that you know flatters your appearance, and having a smile that is healthy and bright. However, when your teeth are stained by unattractive discoloration, it can make you feel as though all of your efforts to look nice are wasted.
Whitening your teeth can do wonders for your self-esteem, bringing an effortless smile back onto your face. However, did you know that you could overdo tooth whitening? We here at Raptou Family Dental want to advise you of the risk and dangers of over-whitening your teeth and educate you on how to prevent this from happening.
Are You Whitening Your Teeth Too Often?
Just like the adage says, it is possible to have too much of a good thing. While having us professionally whiten your teeth for you every once in a while is not only safe but recommended, it is possible to overdo it.
We advise that you come in every year for a professional tooth whitening, but your schedule may vary. For instance, if the effects of your last whitening treatment are still evident after a year, we may push your next whitening treatment out another six months to a year. For patients who are getting stains and discolorations sooner, we may advise them to come back sooner for another whitening, but this is rare.
Many people do not realize that they are “addicted” to tooth whitening. They are chasing the results that they desire and keep trying to go whiter and whiter. If your teeth are stained to the point they are not getting any whiter, it is vital that you talk to us about it immediately. It may be a sign of an underlying condition, such as tooth decay or your dental enamel wearing away, exposing your dentin underneath.
Signs that you are whitening your teeth too often may vary patient by patient. Some big clues that you are causing yourself harm from over whitening, though, include red and swollen gums. They may also bleed or appear “blanched” (whitened). If your teeth start to take on a blue color, that is also a big red flag we need to look out for. Also, if your teeth start to look transparent around the edges, you need to step back from the tooth whitening. Tooth sensitivity is also a sign of excessive tooth whitening, especially if your teeth hurt when exposed to hot or cold. It is normal to want to make your results last as long as possible after a professional whitening with us. We recommend that you made some lifestyle changes to help encourage your teeth to stay white. Avoid dark drinks like coffee and red wine or drink them through a straw. If you smoke, stop immediately. Make sure you brush your teeth twice per day and floss every night. Moreover, make sure you see us every six months for a checkup and a cleaning.
