Invisalign is all the rage in orthodontics these days, and more and more people keep jumping on the teeth-straightening bandwagon. Invisalign allows patients to straighten their teeth without the ostentation of braces, often for the same amount of money and in less time. A series of custom made clear aligners allow you to discretely shape your smile with ease and comfort. Taken out for meals, they are worn for twenty to twenty-two hours a day.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t automatically work for someone just because they want it. While the best way to determine if you’re a candidate is to come in for a consultation at our office, let’s examine a few factors to see if Invisalign is the right choice for you.
Severity of the Dental Problem
What kind of problem do you have and how severe is it? This is our primary concern. Severe orthodontic cases are hard to fix with Invisalign because they require orthodontic procedures that are more advanced and exert more pressure on the teeth.
Invisalign can treat the following as long as they they aren’t too severe:
•
Overbites
•
Underbites
•
Crossbites
•
Crowded teeth
•
Gapped teeth
If your condition is too severe for Invisalign, you will likely need another form of treatment, such as clear braces or metal braces.
Age of the Patient
Invisalign works amazingly well for older teens and adults, but it isn’t a good choice for kids and younger teens because their teeth are not finished growing.
Adults and older teens enjoy Invisalign because it’s transparent. The teenage years are fraught with conscientiousness, and many teens carry this trait into the adult years. Many adults also prefer an option to fix their smile that doesn’t require them having to look like a teenager again. Younger kids don’t have such tendencies quite as much, however.
Dedication to Wear Aligners Twenty-Two Hours a Day
Invisalign is rather easy compared to other orthodontic options, as you can remove your clear aligners. No other option allows for this. You must remove them to eat and drink (except for water), but other than that you must wear them for at least twenty-two hours a day.
Most orthodontists prescribe retainers to their patients once their braces are removed. Unfortunately, many a patient chooses not to wear his retainer so his teeth go back to their original positions. Invisalign requires a similar level of diligence for the treatment to work. If you don’t wear your aligners you will waste valuable time and money!
Invisalign’s Free Online Smile Assessment Test
Invisalign.com offers a free smile test to assess your candidacy. By providing a bit of information, including your contact information, age, and the dental problem you want fixed, this test can help you decide if you’d make a good candidate.
Take note, however, that these questions are meant to prepare you for a consultation, not replace it. Dental professionals like Dr. Raptou are the ones who can determine whether or not you qualify. Invisalign is an incredible innovation that works orthodontic wonders incognito, but sadly, it’s not for everyone.
