Dental Implants![]() What Are Dental Implants?Dental implants are designed to replace missing teeth. They can be used to replace a single tooth, or they can be used to replace a whole mouth of missing teeth. This unique and revolutionary restorative method involves the use of small, titanium rods that are surgically implanted into your jawbone. Your jaw fuses to the implants as you heal, and the rod essentially becomes a “root” on which your replacement crowns are placed. They provide a strong, stable, permanent alternative to traditional dentures. There are a few different types of implants, making them able to meet a variety of needs:
How Implants Are PlacedUnlike any other restorative option for your teeth, implants involve a surgical procedure. A consultation before surgery, complete with digital imaging, will allow us to plan optimal placement for your implants. A local anesthetic is administered at the surgical site. We then make incisions in your gum tissue to expose the bone. Holes are drilled into your jaw, and the implants are placed. Your gums are stitched closed around the rods, leaving a small portion visible above the gumline. Healing takes anywhere from a few weeks to a few months and is based on several factors, such as your health, and the number of implants placed. You will be given a set of temporary teeth in the meantime. Your progress is closely monitored. Once you have fully healed, abutments are placed on the implants, and impressions are taken. These impressions are used to fabricate your replacement teeth, which will be permanently fixed in place once they are ready.
